In the early 1970's while living in Peterborough Jane Eccles became aware of the writer Margaret Laurence and of the attempts to ban her books. The tone of those books, specifically from the Diviners coupled with the visuals of the dark navy lakes in the area  influenced a series of works relating to the geography of the lakes but also to the mystery of the lakes. A lone swimmer was introduced and a spiritual tone evolved.
